United and SAS: choose the right pet transport service

Compare current cabin/hold options, carrier fit and directional conditions.

United ordinary pets are cabin only

PetSafe is unavailable for ordinary pets; military and diplomatic cargo exceptions are separate. The current fee is USD150 each way. Most aircraft allow two pets only with two adjacent purchased seats; listed narrow-body aircraft allow one. Check every operating partner and route, including transit bans and the one-way Guam exception.

SAS distinguishes accompanied hold from cargo

Cabin travel allows 8 kg including a 40×25×23 cm carrier, one carrier per traveller. Accompanied hold allows up to 50 kg including a crate accepted for the aircraft. Unaccompanied, oversize and cargo-only routes need a forwarder. Certain short-nosed dogs are excluded from hold but may meet cabin rules. This does not guarantee independent cargo acceptance.

Airline and entry requirements both apply

United’s 28-day rabies interval for US departures abroad is a carrier condition; an EU 21-day example does not replace it. SAS’s eight-week minimum does not permit entry to a country requiring older animals. Confirm vaccination, certificates, age, breed and carrier limits for the actual route. A passenger ticket is not a confirmed pet place. Review every transit and return leg separately.
