Departure-specific rabies testing, passport or health certificate, dog treatment and cargo entry requirements.
Vaccination records
Dog / Cat · Separate cargo service
For the standard route, identify the pet with a readable compliant chip before rabies vaccination. The primary vaccination starts at at least 12 weeks; wait at least 21 full days after the first vaccination or final dose of the primary course, counting day 1 as the following day, and longer if the product requires it. Keep vaccination valid. A continuous on-time booster has no new wait; a lapse restarts the course and applicable testing.
Ordinary healthy adult privately owned dogs/cats, at most five, entering England, Scotland or Wales without sale/transfer. Owner travels within five days; another accompanying person needs written authorisation. This ordinary commercial-airline branch uses cargo; private charter, assistance dogs, Northern Ireland as destination, young animals, commercial movements and special Ukraine cases need separate assessment. Confirm actual origin, route, breed and carrier.
Choose the correct document branch for the actual origin and use an approved route and carrier. Ordinary commercial-flight pets must travel as cargo; private charter and assistance-dog exceptions are separate. This non-commercial branch is limited to at most five own pets with no ownership transfer and owner travel within five days. Complete the required non-commercial declaration and written authorisation when another person accompanies the pet.

A veterinarian must treat the dog against Echinococcus multilocularis 24–120 hours before entry into Great Britain, using an approved product containing praziquantel or a proven equivalent. Record product/manufacturer, date and time, veterinary stamp and signature in the passport or health certificate. Cats do not need this dog treatment. Delays beyond 120 hours may require treatment again; this window is measured at entry, not take-off.

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service
Pets on ordinary commercial flights into Great Britain must travel as cargo. Cabin or excess-baggage booking is not the normal permitted import mode. Private charter and guide/assistance-dog arrangements have separate exceptions. Before booking, verify the approved route, operating carrier, animal reception and acceptance of the pet; an animal-health document alone does not grant carriage.

This ordinary non-commercial branch covers at most five own pets with no sale, rehoming or ownership transfer. Keep proof that the owner travels within five days before or after the pets. If another person accompanies them, carry the owner’s written authorisation. More animals, ownership transfer or a larger time gap uses another procedure; cargo handling alone does not make the trip commercial.

Verify chip readability and record its number and implantation/reading date in the travel document. For chips outside ISO11784/11785, check with the carrier whether to bring a reader. An unreadable chip can lead to refusal or quarantine and repeating preparation. A clearly legible tattoo made on or before 3 July 2011, before rabies vaccination, has a separate accepted identification option; do not require every qualifying tattooed pet to be rechipped.

EU or listed origin: routine antibody test not required
Dog / Cat · Separate cargo service
For direct movement from the EU or a country/region listed by Great Britain, the ordinary route does not require a rabies blood test. Valid rabies vaccination, identification, the correct document and dog treatment when applicable still apply. Check the full journey and any unlisted-country stay; this is not an exemption from all health requirements. Great Britain’s list must not be replaced with the EU’s separate list.

For the standard first-entry route from a non-EU, unlisted origin, a veterinarian takes blood at least 30 days after rabies vaccination. Use an EU-approved laboratory; the result must be at least 0.5 IU/ml. Get a report copy and the sampling date recorded in the travel document, then wait three months from sampling before travel. This is three calendar months, not a copied 90-day rule. Keep vaccinations continuously valid for the test to remain valid; qualifying EU pre-tested returns have a separate wait exemption.

From these passport-issuing origins, a valid recognised pet passport is one accepted document option, alongside applicable certificate alternatives. Check owner, animal identity, rabies and required dog-treatment entries; for passports issued on/after 29 December 2014, the owner signs section I. Only an EU vet can enter rabies details into an EU passport; any country’s vet may record tapeworm treatment. Carry original documents. A flight from Europe alone does not create a passport.

A Great Britain pet health certificate is an accepted document option from any country on this standard international branch. It must be signed, stamped and dated by a government-authorised official veterinarian; a private vet who lacks that authority must obtain the official completion. Enter within ten days of issue. This is a certificate window, not a rabies waiting period; supporting vaccination/test evidence still applies.

Direct listed routes: confirm dog-treatment exemption
Dog · Separate cargo service
A dog coming directly from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta or Norway does not need the usual entry tapeworm treatment. Confirm the full route: selecting one of these origins is not proof of direct travel. If the direct-route exemption does not apply, arrange the veterinary treatment and record within 24–120 hours before entry. This is a dog-only rule.

A cat travelling from Australia also needs an Australian Department of Agriculture certificate confirming no exposure to Hendra virus in the 60 days before departure. Arrange it with the GB travel document. This extra declaration applies to cats from Australia, not every dog or every origin.

If the actual departure is Peninsular Malaysia, obtain a Malaysian government veterinary certificate: no contact with pigs and no presence on a Nipah-affected holding in the 60 days before departure, plus a negative Nipah-antibody blood test in an approved laboratory on a sample taken no more than ten days before departure. This is specifically the peninsula, not an automatic requirement for every Malaysian region.

NI, Channel Islands or Isle of Man: document exception
Dog / Cat · Separate cargo service
GOV.UK states that a pet dog/cat travelling into Great Britain from Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or Isle of Man does not need a pet passport or health certificate for that entry. This specific document exception does not establish every other health or carrier condition; confirm the complete route, especially any travel via another country.
Only the stated document exception for entry into Great Britain from Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or Isle of Man. Check all other applicable movement, carrier and dog-treatment conditions separately; this is not a route into Northern Ireland.
Expect the chip and travel documents to be checked at arrival or before boarding. Incorrect documents or preparation can lead to quarantine or return, with charges payable by the owner. For arrival from outside the EU, collect the pet only after customs clearance; an agent, travel company or airline can usually help. Arrange the service before travel.

A banned dog type cannot enter Great Britain unless it already has a valid Certificate of Exemption. Confirm the type and the applicable England, Wales or Scotland conditions before booking; paperwork for rabies or an airline booking does not itself supply this exemption. This rule does not apply to cats.

Applicable conditions
The AHC page says the certificate must be issued in Great Britain, the return must be from the EU or an AHC-accepting country, and less than six months must have passed since entry to that place. The document overview instead says an AHC issued in Great Britain in the last six months. Confirm the actual return validity with APHA/carrier; do not automatically grant six months from whichever date is later. A GB health certificate is a separate document option.

Ukraine has separate GOV.UK guidance and is outside this ordinary first-entry branch. For Åland, confirm the applicable recognised-origin/document status rather than classifying it automatically as an unlisted country from its separate menu code. These selections retain a route-confirmation note; no ordinary listed/unlisted test schedule is asserted here.
