US certificate and Ghana import permit with separate dog/cat requirements.
Documents and permits
Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service
Apply to Ghana’s Veterinary Services for an import permit before import, submitting the required health, vaccination and test documents. The authority quotes three working days for processing, excluding weekends/holidays; this is not a guaranteed application deadline.
Selected official requirements for personal pet dogs/cats exported from the United States. These are entry conditions, not airline acceptance. Only healthy adult, non-pregnant, vaccinated personal pets are considered here. Other origins, breeding, transit, young animals and permit-specific conditions need separate checks. Confirm all requirements with the issuing veterinarian and destination authority.

Use the linked US model, issued after examination by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and endorsed by APHIS. It is valid 30 days after issue. Digital endorsement is accepted; carry the printed endorsed certificate.

The US model certifies health, no known rabies exposure and origin outside a rabies-quarantined area, and records rabies product, dates and validity. The veterinarian verifies a microchip if one is entered; “microchip and/or name” does not itself require implantation.

Ghana’s dog-import page requires negative Brucella canis, Trypanosoma evansi, Babesia gibsoni, Dirofilaria immitis and Leishmania spp. results before permit issue. Its listed methods are respectively serum agglutination/Giemsa/RT-PCR; card agglutination and/or Giemsa; Giemsa; microfilaria filtration or Knott; and IFAT/ELISA/direct agglutination. The veterinarian must arrange accepted methods.

For the required dog tests, Ghana accepts original laboratory reports and permits the laboratory to send a copy directly to the Chief Veterinary Officer. Reports are valid 31 days; if that expires before permit issue, repeat testing. Absence of a listed disease in the exporting country does not waive the test.

Applicable conditions
The national page requires proof of distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, Leptospira canicola/icterohaemorrhagiae, parainfluenza and rabies vaccination. It says doses must be at least one month old and “valid for 12 months before departure”. Confirm the exact validity meaning with Veterinary Services; the US model’s optional table does not waive national conditions.

Ghana’s cat-import section requires a health attestation and vaccination records for panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis and rabies before permit issue, plus an official veterinary certificate. It gives no cat-specific vaccination waiting interval; do not substitute the separate wildlife-felid requirements.
