Belize Pet Import Requirements

Prepare the BAHA permit, a certificate within two weeks of travel, current rabies records and parasite treatment; allow two working days for arrival notice.

Obtain the BAHA permit before transporting the pet

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Obtain BAHA import approval before transporting the dog or cat and comply with its actual sanitary conditions, dates, origin and port. Submitting an application or paying a fee does not guarantee a permit. An exemption from US certificate endorsement is not an exemption from the Belize permit. Have BAHA confirm the actual export and transit itinerary before booking; a form offering an air-freight box is not an airline acceptance document.

Selected necessary conditions for ordinary private non-commercial dogs/cats with current rabies vaccination. The actual origin, export country, transit, permit and carrier must qualify. First vaccination and booster history have different conditions; young or unvaccinated animals need advance written confirmation. Air transport filters do not establish cabin, hold or cargo acceptance. US export procedures do not apply to other origins.

Health certificate issued within two weeks of travel

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Use a veterinary certificate issued by a registered veterinarian in the country of origin within two weeks before the travel date. It must attest that the pet is clinically healthy, free from signs of infectious or contagious disease and external parasites, and has no fresh wound or wound still healing. Match the issued permit. The generic APHIS Form 7001 form says thirty days after issue, but that does not extend Belize’s two-week condition or a shorter carrier requirement. US accredited-veterinarian and endorsement procedures are stated separately.

Current rabies vaccination and complete vaccine details

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

The published BAHA dog/cat conditions require current rabies vaccination. Record vaccination date, manufacturer, trade name, lot number and expiry on the certificate. Do not vaccinate a puppy or kitten before three months of age; record age or birth date. Keep calendar months rather than substituting twelve weeks. First vaccination and qualifying adult boosters have separate timing below. Young or unvaccinated exceptions are unresolved here and must not be assumed from the US summary alone.

Notify BAHA two working days before arrival

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Notify BAHA of the date, time and transport details, including flight or vessel number, two working days before arrival so an officer is available at the actual point of entry. Plan around weekends, holidays and schedule changes, and confirm receipt and inspection arrangements. Two working days is not simply forty-eight hours or two calendar days. The notice does not replace the permit, certificate or inspection.

New crate or cleaned and disinfected before use

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Use a new transport cage, or clean and disinfect it in the country of origin before use for export with a product registered there. Confirm the carrier’s size, ventilation and carriage conditions separately. This sanitation condition is not a universal crate size, cargo booking approval or proof that every airline offers all three air modes.

Give origin, export, transit and entry details; allow at least seven days

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

The BAHA application linked by the current site asks separately for country of origin, country of export, transit, Belize address, port, transport and animal identification, breed, sex and age. Use the live-animal and pet-animal sections as applicable. Its note says allow a minimum of seven days for processing and warns a permit may not be issued, with other approvals, risk assessment or inspection possible. Seven days is not a guaranteed approval date, quarantine duration or health-certificate validity.

First rabies vaccination: at least four weeks before travel

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

A dog or cat receiving its first rabies vaccination must have it at least four weeks before travelling, and the vaccination must not be given before three months of age. Retain both the birth and vaccination dates, and ensure immunity remains current. A three-month-old animal vaccinated just before the trip does not satisfy this ordinary path. Do not substitute an adult booster exception or an unrelated country’s twenty-one-day wait.

Shorter booster wait only with qualifying adult vaccine history

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

BAHA allows travel less than four weeks after a rabies booster for a dog or cat aged at least fifteen months, with a documented history containing at least one vaccination given after three months of age and a current rabies booster. Carry that history. This is a conditional alternative to the first-vaccination interval, not a rule that every booster or every young animal has no wait. Ask BAHA about incomplete records, lapses and other histories.

Internal and external treatment within thirty days before export

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

The current BAHA dog/cat attachment requires treatment against both internal and external parasites within thirty days before export, using a product registered in the country of origin. Have the veterinarian record the actual animal, date and product and meet the permit. The US web summary calls treatment strongly recommended, but that wording does not remove the destination authority’s stated requirement. Do not invent a specific drug, dose or separate tick-hour window not stated in the applicable permit.

Present the pet and documents for BAHA entry inspection

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

All pet animals entering Belize are inspected by BAHA. Present the animal, import approval and health/vaccination records at the approved entry point. The published conditions say noncompliant pets will not be allowed entry, and veterinary inspection costs are borne by the importer. An inspection is not proof of routine fixed-duration quarantine, nor an option to arrive without approval and repair the file afterwards.

Disease-affected origin or transit may require veterinary inspection

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

BAHA’s conditions require veterinary inspection at entry for pets from or traversing countries affected by quarantine-significant diseases or pests, including foot-and-mouth disease and screwworm. Declare the complete route; the permit communicates the need and cost of veterinary inspection. Do not classify a country as free or infected solely from its departure-airport code, copy another country’s zone list, or convert the inspection into a numerical quarantine.

US route: accredited veterinarian; no APHIS endorsement

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

APHIS states that US pet dog/cat certificates to Belize are issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and do not require APHIS endorsement. Keep that exemption specific to this US route, not birds or other exporting countries. The certificate still has to satisfy the BAHA permit, the two-week issue window, rabies details and current treatments; thirty-day wording on the generic 7001 form is not an extension of destination rules.

Confirm young or unvaccinated entry before booking

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The US APHIS summary describes a rabies exemption below four months with home quarantine in Belize until thirty days after vaccination by a registered veterinarian. The current BAHA attachment instead requires current rabies vaccination, no dose before three months and a four-week first-dose interval, and says noncompliant pets are not admitted. Their relationship and the current permit procedure for young animals are not resolved here. Obtain written BAHA approval of age, origin, vaccination and supervision before booking; do not treat the older US description as a general young-pet admission right.

Confirm current permit validity, fees and passport option

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

Use the dates, number of entries, identity and charges stated on the actual BAHA approval. An older pet procedure describes single-use permits and a separate one-animal multi-entry passport, but its last revision is 2009; it is not evidence of current fees, a guaranteed validity period or five-day approval. The current linked application asks for at least seven days and warns approval is not guaranteed. Ask BAHA whether a passport option is currently available and which requirements still apply on each entry.

Confirm chip, antibody and special-breed conditions on your permit

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The general dog/cat attachment does not establish universal chip, rabies-titer threshold, waiting period or special-breed approval for every origin. Absence from that short list is not proof of an exemption or that a particular animal is admitted. The application distinguishes origin, export and transit and allows risk-based conditions. Obtain the actual permit’s additional requirements and carrier approval, especially for unusual histories, special breeds, medication and return trips; do not borrow another destination’s numbers.
