Barbados Pet Import Requirements

Prepare the import-permit application and arrival details for your real export country; detailed health guidance is currently available for US exports.

Pet identification

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Identify the pet with an ISO 11784/11785-compatible microchip before rabies vaccination. The veterinarian verifies the chip and its number must match every supporting vaccination and laboratory document.

Selected official conditions for private dogs/cats exported from the United States by air. The actual residence and transit history determine the certificate branch. Other export countries need their own sanitary conditions; a common permit form does not extend US tests, exemptions or endorsement procedures. No airline acceptance is established.

Documents and permits

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Obtain the Veterinary Services import permit first; it is valid for six months from issue. The official veterinarian must see the permit for certificate endorsement.

Vaccination records

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Vaccinate from three months of age using a suitable inactivated vaccine after microchipping. Wait 35 days after the final dose of a primary course or a booster following a lapse; vaccination day is day zero. A timely booster follows the continuous-validity branch.

Tests and conditional pathways

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Category 1 requires three continuous months in the US or other listed Category 1 countries (the certificate also has a since-birth branch). Otherwise use Category 2: an approved-laboratory FAVN result ≥0.5 IU/ml, sampling at least 30 days after rabies vaccination, and the linked certificate’s 90-day wait after sampling. A failed result requires revaccination and retesting. Sea arrivals also use Category 2 and need separate transport planning.

Tests and conditional pathways

Dog · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Dogs over six months need a heartworm test within 30 days before leaving the US. ELISA antigen tests may be used; a positive result or prior treatment calls for the certificate/authority’s follow-up pathway. Cats are exempt. Confirm the exact six-month boundary with Veterinary Services, as the page and certificate express it differently.

Parasite treatment

Dog · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Treat dogs against ticks and tapeworms within seven days before leaving the US; the tapeworm product must contain praziquantel. Record treatments on the certificate. This dog-specific requirement does not apply to cats.

Documents and permits

Arrange examination and the export health certificate within seven days of travel, with official government endorsement. The certificate lasts ten days from endorsement (specific sea extension). Use the linked certificate, including its wound/screwworm attestations; review those declarations against the pet’s actual origin and transit history before signing.

Arrival procedures

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Give Veterinary Services at least three working days’ notice with arrival details, owner/agent contact and customs-broker information. Working days are not ordinary calendar days.

Use a customs broker and arrange the airline pre-alert. Pets go directly to the Animal Reception Centre for veterinary/customs clearance; cabin pets are handed to handling agents on disembarkation. Customs treatment of live animals as cargo does not itself require flying as manifest cargo.

Arrange the actual dog/cat import approval

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Use the Veterinary Services dog/cat import-permit application and obtain the actual approval and its conditions before arranging entry. The public form offers individual applicants and a Pet purpose; submitting a form or selecting a country does not establish approval. Conditions may change at short notice with the exporting country’s disease status. Confirm current fees, validity, number of entries and any additional conditions on your own approval; US six-month permit guidance is not automatically extended to other exporting countries.

The shared permit-application workflow is covered for overseas origins. Detailed health conditions currently cover only private dogs/cats exported from the US, using its official route-specific certificate. The export-country menu is not an approved-origin list. Confirm the actual permit, residence, transit, age, health requirements and carrier; common application steps do not establish admission or a complete medical checklist for other origins.

Prepare the application identity and exporter details

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

The current online form requests importer and exporter names, addresses and contacts, the country of export, any agent, and each animal’s species, breed, age, sex and microchip number. Select the real intended use; breeding, working and service choices are not the same as an ordinary pet. Prepare the airline/vessel, expected arrival and customs-broker details too. The country selector is a data-entry menu, not evidence that every listed origin or medical pathway is accepted. A microchip field does not by itself establish timing, ISO standard or vaccine requirements for every origin.

Complete missing arrival details three working days ahead

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

The current application says information unavailable when applying must be provided no less than three working days before arrival, alongside the airline/vessel and customs-broker section. This is a deadline for missing information, not permission to begin the whole application three days before travel. Count weekends and Barbados public holidays separately. The form can be saved before submission but says no changes can be made after submission; contact Animal Imports/Transits at [email protected] about changed flights or corrections and confirm the actual approval remains usable.

US certificate: verify screwworm origin and 60-day transit history

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

The currently linked US certificate requires the accredited veterinarian to find the animal free of fresh or healing wounds and clinical screwworm signs. It also declares that the animal originates outside a zone under screwworm control and has not transited a zone under control in the last sixty days. Verify the actual origin and full itinerary, rather than assuming every US location always qualifies. This is not a general sixty-day residence rule or a declaration that another exporting country is free of screwworm. If the statements cannot truthfully be signed, obtain instructions from Barbados before travel.

Obtain the sanitary conditions for your actual export country

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The common online permit form does not supply a complete origin-specific health certificate, approved Category 1 list, residence exception or laboratory schedule for your route. Obtain these from Barbados for the actual country, residence and transit history. US rabies, heartworm, parasite and endorsement instructions must not be copied automatically to other origins. A successful form submission or a listed country is not proof of admission, no testing or no quarantine. This page currently provides common application steps for this origin, rather than a complete medical checklist.

Confirm the form’s 21-day declaration wording

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The live dog/cat application displays a note that declarations must be received at least twenty-one days before “the event”. It does not define that event or explain how this note relates to permit processing and the separate three-working-day deadline for missing arrival details. Ask Veterinary Services which date and documents apply to your case. Do not turn the wording into a guaranteed twenty-one-day processing time, a promise of approval or a universal health-certificate validity period; arrange the application early.

US dogs exactly six months old: confirm the test boundary

Dog · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The APHIS webpage says dogs over six months need the pre-export heartworm test, while the linked certificate exempts cats and dogs less than six months. These wordings differ for a dog exactly six calendar months old. Confirm the required certification with the issuing veterinarian and Barbados before booking. Do not treat the absence of an age filter on this site as an automatic exemption. The ordinary test for older dogs remains a separate selected rule.
