Scandinavian Airlines Pet Policy

Cabin and accompanied hold, eight-/fifty-kilogram limits, age and short-nosed dog conditions.

Cabin total maximum 8 kg including bag

Dog / Cat · In the cabin

Small dogs/cats may travel in the cabin when accepted, with pet plus carrier at most 8 kg. The pet/container counts as carry-on; an additional personal item up to 40×30×15 cm is allowed. The 8 kg is combined weight, not an 8 kg animal plus a free bag allowance. SAS Business and charter flights are excluded by the current page; confirm the actual class and operator before booking.

Selected ordinary private dog/cat rules on the actual operating carrier’s service. The mode filter may show a prohibition or conditional route; it does not grant carriage. Confirm pet space, aircraft, cabin class, every operating segment and origin/transit/destination requirements separately. Assistance animals, military/diplomatic exceptions and commercial shipments are outside this ordinary path.

Cabin carrier 40×25×23 cm, one carrier per traveller

Dog / Cat · In the cabin

The cabin carrier maximum is 40×25×23 cm in length×width×height. It must close completely, be ventilated, leak/bite-proof and designed for animals; SAS recommends a flexible soft Sherpa-type bag. The animal must stand, turn and lie comfortably. Each traveller may bring one carrier with up to two healthy pets of the same species, still within total 8 kg; this is not two carriers or an exemption from fit requirements. Keep it closed under the seat throughout.

Request within 24 hours of booking and at least 24 hours before departure

Dog / Cat · In the cabin

SAS asks for the pet request within 24 hours of booking, no later than 24 hours before departure, subject to limited pet space. Cabin requests/payment can use My Bookings after booking or Customer Service; absence of the option can mean the quota is full. Checked-hold booking needs Customer Service with crate dimensions/weight. Paid passenger tickets alone do not confirm a pet place. SAS recommends arriving at least two hours before departure.

At least 8 weeks and weaned; under 14 weeks needs fitness certificate

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

SAS does not carry dogs/cats under eight weeks, animals still nursing or nursing mothers. Under fourteen weeks also requires a veterinary certificate that the animal is fit for transport. This extra certificate does not waive import vaccination/minimum-age conditions; do not use the old blanket twelve-week international-age claim. Check the destination, transit country and carrier with the actual birth date.

Accompanied hold total maximum 50 kg, aircraft-specific crate

Dog / Cat · Accompanied hold baggage

SAS accepts only dogs/cats as accompanied excess baggage in the cargo hold, up to 50 kg including crate, subject to route and aircraft acceptance. Bring an escape-proof IATA-compliant crate; the maximum dimensions depend on the actual aircraft. Do not replace them with the old 125×75×85 cm cargo reference or classify accompanied hold as unavailable. No access to the animal during flight. Heavier/unaccompanied or cargo-only routes need a separately arranged cargo service.

Hold sharing: compatible adults or same-litter young

Dog / Cat · Accompanied hold baggage

The hold page allows up to two adults of comparable size, accustomed to one another and at most 14 kg each in one crate; an animal over 14 kg needs its own crate. Up to three animals from the same litter aged up to six months may share. These are conditional sharing limits, not three unrelated pets or a replacement for 50 kg total, adequate space and route acceptance. Confirm any stricter destination rules, particularly US import arrangements.

Hold transport declaration: two copies after confirmation

Dog / Cat · Accompanied hold baggage

After SAS confirms accompanied-hold transport, its page asks for the Certificate for Transportation of Animals and two completed copies at check-in, except domestic flights in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. This airline declaration does not replace a government health certificate, import permit or vaccination record. Use the current form from SAS and confirm its contents.

Certain short-nosed dogs excluded from accompanied hold

Dog · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage

Since January 1, 2024 SAS excludes bulldogs, pugs, Pekingese and their crossbreeds from the accompanied cargo hold. They may use the cabin only if all cabin limits, including 8 kg with carrier, are satisfied. Other short-nosed dogs may be accepted in hold with a crate one size larger, good ventilation and a door with bars from top to bottom; lower-only ventilation is not accepted. This dog-specific rule is not a blanket cat prohibition or proof of independent cargo acceptance.

Independent cargo uses a freight forwarder, not baggage booking

Dog / Cat · Separate cargo service

If the pet exceeds accompanied-hold criteria, travels alone or uses a route that requires cargo, arrange it through a freight forwarder such as SAS Cargo. The passenger page does not establish a universal cargo crate size, price, station acceptance or date guarantee. Obtain written confirmation from the actual cargo provider for animal, breed, itinerary and handling. Other animal species use cargo, outside this dog/cat dataset; this does not turn a passenger cabin quota into a cargo quota.

Fees by route/container; use confirmed current quote

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

SAS charges a pet/container fee each way, varying with route/destination, with refunds under ticket rules. The current policy page does not provide a single fixed amount; do not republish old EUR60/75 or a cargo starting price as a universal current tariff. Ask SAS or the cargo provider for the actual service, currency, segments and confirmed pet charge before payment.

Confirm cargo-only route wording for the actual stations

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The SAS page gives China, UK and UAE as examples of travel to/via countries where cargo may be required. This is carrier guidance, not proof that national law requires all pet movements into China or UAE to be cargo. It does not determine every city, transit, direction, code-share or cargo-provider acceptance. Obtain route-specific confirmation and use current destination rules rather than inferring reciprocal cabin/hold permission or a global prohibition.
