American Airlines Pet Policy

Selected official pet-carriage conditions; route and service coverage is shown below.

Eligibility and route restrictions

Dog / Cat · In the cabin / Accompanied hold baggage / Separate cargo service

Ordinary dogs/cats may use eligible cabin service or American Airlines Cargo. Ticket-counter checked pets are accepted only for active-duty US Military or State Department Foreign Service personnel on official orders. That exception does not give ordinary passengers checked-pet service. No sedated or tranquilized pets.

Selected official conditions only, for the operating airline and the direction, aircraft, service and dates stated in each rule. A mode tab may contain a prohibition or unresolved condition; it does not grant carriage. Obtain actual pet space approval and origin/transit/destination clearance separately. Assistance animals, commercial movement and unlisted services need separate assessment.

Carrier and crate dimensions

Dog / Cat · In the cabin

One carrier per traveller, kept closed under the seat throughout. Soft carrier recommended: 46 L × 28 W × 28 H cm; rigid mainline 48 × 33 × 22 cm, American Eagle 40 × 30 × 20 cm. Confirm actual under-seat space. One additional personal item OR carry-on, not both. Only the three-cabin A321T premium compartment has the stated 20 lb combined limit; it is not a universal cabin weight cap.

Rules depend on the route, animal and operating carrier. Confirm your own journey with the relevant authority and airline.

Applicable conditions

The page links current CDC requirements but a lower section still says 16 weeks for high-risk US dogs. Current all-dog CDC entry requires at least six months; do not rely on the older lower age. American refuses cabin dogs from or visiting high-risk rabies countries within the preceding six months. Confirm the history-specific paperwork; assistance dogs have separate rules.
